My current commuter is sadly reaching the end of it's working life (~17 years old), so I'm looking at new bike. Based on previous experience I want to be able fit "Proper" mudguards (i.e. not race-blades or similar) such as the SKS Chromoplastic guards . What are the Triban's like for proper mudguards clearance? Does it vary between variants? Given it's to be used as a year round commuter - I'd like to get 25mm tyres - are there any bikes in the range that can take 25mm tyres with full mudguards?

Original Red T3 had minimal clearance although with 23cc tyres it is possible (but not easy) to get crud roadracers on. Other (later) bikes had more clearance I believe but can't say from personal experience

Thanks for the replys so far.
Has anyone got any experience of the newer Tirban/B'Twin road bikes with regards clearance for mudguards?

They all use standard (short) drop brakes so are all the same. You need either long drop calipers, cantilevers or becoming more common, discs. Since B'Twin dropped the CX bike from the range they now have nothing to offer you but 'hybrids'.

When I got the chance to look at an Alur in the flesh the other day I thought that had a lot more clearance than the T3 and also the T500/SEs that were also in the store. With the direct mount/chainstay brakes though I'm not sure if the mounting options would work.

I didn't think the brakes offered any more clearance, and with no brake bridge or frame eyes it's not an obvious choice if you want mudguards. Depending on budget, I think discs are the way to go, Decathlon had planned a CX with disc mounts but it was dropped, possibly related to the delays/ problems with the other new models.

I did conduct a makeshift clearance check on the Alur in the store and it seemed to me to offer more clearance than the Tribans on display, and certainly than the T3, but just as you say chas there's no real mounting options there. The bTwin Cyclo-X I have with canti brakes doesn't have any frame mounts unfortunately and I have a feeling the SKS raceblade longs I bought for the T3 will be too narrow for the 32c tyres I have on the CX but I'll see how they go. There's always p-clips and 'proper' mudguards. At the moment I have MTB guards on the bike but they're not so good at preventing the spray.
