On a similar subject; Merlin have just released a Β£299 entry level bike with 3x8 claris and a carbon fork which sets it directly against the 300 and 500SE.
Initial news article is on road.cc - they've also requested one so they can ride and review it properly. Should be interesting considering how much they loved the 500SE when the reviewed it a few months ago.

I'm loving my Merlin Single Malt; if Merlin do a similar build on the road bike then it is likely to be good quality as well.

Its got a compact chainset not a triple but it looks outstanding value with Mavic wheels as well. I would have been tempted if this was around two years ago although its not quite red enough. www.merlincycles.com/merlin-performance-road-pr7-bike-73113.html

Yep but compact 8 speed is a bit stretched out for my liking.

The Merlin bike is pretty decent, if they could have got it out as 2 x 10 for not much more it would be outstanding as an n+1 winter trainer / commuter; as a starter, no one will notice the 8 x 2, as all they'll really be interested in is the top n bottom, so you've got a point there.

I'm running 2x8 on a compact at the moment, although I have taken steps towards 2x10 for next Spring by recently buying the shifters. It is a bit limited/gappy in the gears, but not exactly unbearable, as despite cycling for 3yrs I haven't progressed beyond starter.

After introducing myself on here yesterday as someone who is about to buy a 500SE, the Merlin has thrown me a bit sideways. Especially as it's not red...!

Good to see, but it was in the Guardian - 'wrong about everything, always' ;-)
