Having cycled across Iceland last year I've been keeping an eye on the news concerning the Bárðarbunga Volcano especially so as the wife was worried about her flight to Portugal and back. She's still out there so I am monitoring the situation. Hopefully it will blow and I'll have another week of peace and quiet. Anyway.... it's all rather interesting and things are brewing up nicely. Earthquakes are shaking the island like mad and the biggest one happened a day or so ago at 5.3 on the richter scale. If it pops underneath the glacier we'll have another mega ash cloud like the one in 2010. The Icelandic coastguard discovered a line of caldera's on a reconnaissance flight this morning with the depressions being about 15 metres deep. The ice is melting from below and the Icelandic's are pretty worried about the big threat of flooding that will terminate at Dettifoss on the north coast. It is a waterfall that has the largest volume of water flowing through it in the whole of Europe. Niagara falls dwarfs it in volume but if the volcano goes pop they are expecting similar volumes as Niagara but through the much narrower set of falls. Here are a few sites that some of you may be interested in. baering.github.io/www.ruv.is/volcanoen.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakeswww.volcanodiscovery.com/bardarbunga/news.html

Every time I hear about this volcano I keep thinking of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Perhaps we could get the executive members of ALS to stand underneath for a douche, they have to do something to justify their 6 figure salaries surely?!

All the activity below the surface has finally forced the first production of lava at ground level with a small eruption. The good news is that the eruption is north of the glacier so no ice was involved which could have created an explosive cocktail and associated ash cloud. It remains to be seen if this is going to be the only outlet for the lava but a red alert has been issued for local aviation around the immediate area. www.ruv.is/frett/eruption-fissure-1-km-long-estimate

Will your 30/34 gearing allow you to spin to the top? Make an interesting segment should you record it

I've got my eye on route F26 which is a 4x4 route over the interior. It is currently open so fingers crossed it is possible to cycle over. If not I'll have to look at a plan B. Plenty of options to go at in Iceland.
Taking my off road tourer again but I might have to take some spare MTB tyres with me this time.

Just a note, of it goes bang ash cloud and all, there is very little danger of a repeat of Eya... E15. That was really only the aviation issue because of the really odd weather pattern. Also since then, Europe has a network of lidars that can "see" the ash and so route planes round it.
