Race tracker is back up and my word things have developed since it's been down. Epic battle for second place is well and truly on. As is the race for the first woman to Istanbul. Looks like the lead could change again there. "Josh Ibbett 386k to finish, Richard Dunnett 367k to finish, on completely different routes and one with no shifter" posted 7 hours ago. No point in them sleeping tonight. Get to Istanbul in the morning.

Cyprus sounds ideal for a winter tour Dave. Very reasonable accommodation to be had at that time of year. Did you cover most of the island? I've got a lot more to go at in Cyprus, Chris. I covered a fair bit of the north and just did the transit to the south via Nicosia to Larnaca airport. Turkey was brills as usual. triban3owners.freeforums.net/thread/2365/tour-turkey-cyprus-november-2013Thanks for the reminder of your thread Dave. You can certainly see the attraction of lightweight touring there! I like the look of the west end of Cyprus, from Limassol round to Paphos, or the section from Paphos up to the north coast. Was out in Cyprus for New Year a couple of years ago and the temp seemed spot on for touring.

It looks like a flatish run in for both of them but that's the sort of thing that could make all the difference when it's so close.

Josh is the one without the shifter. Super efforts going on.

Thanks KiwiBeard. The tracker for Ibbett hasn't updated for 40 odd mins so that might explain that. The sheer prospect of 30+ hours straight in the saddle in a racing situation after all they have been through is insane!

The race for second is still going.
Not sure if Josh has stopped or just the tracker. If the tracker positions are correct then Richard with the lead with 3-4 hours to the finish.

It looks like a tracker problem as the last report was over four hours ago now. Such a shame! I know they were reporting battery issues a few days back. I hope Josh is still on the road - but if so where? I notice the control car has moved back out from Istanbul. Maybe they are looking for him. It would be gutting if a tech issue with the tracker were to raise questions about the final 100+ kms in to the finish.

Looks like Pippa Handley's tracker is also having issues, so it's hard to read the state of the race between her and Gaby Leveridge.

But the main cost is time obv, "if you want to beat Kristof Allegaert remember that he did 23,000km of training THIS YEAR". That isfurther than I would drive in a year, never mind cycle!

So we are unlikely to know where he is until he gets in to the finish.

After more than nine days and approaching 3,500 km of riding second and third places are separated by a mere 35 minutes.

Look out for #99, Chris Dobbs or Dobbsy! He, like a few others, have had a bit of bother with Garmins as his crashed and then the Usb port snapped leading to him dropping back in the field as he went down the wrong valley. I've been told 13 of the riders have also had issues with theirs as well, I would have probably packed a couple of maps myself as well just incase. I'd love to do it myself (if I ever was fit enough) but not on the bikes that some are doing it on! The second placed guy last time I checked is doing it on a De Rosa Super King. I know he's sponsored by their UK distributors, but with a large part of the journey going through some less well off countries, I'd be very wary of stopping in case the bike was nicked! Check out the comments on the announcement on road.cc road.cc/content/news/99546-epic-cycling-transcontinental-and-world-cycle-race-return-2014Only 2 days required to get permission from the missus.
