Did anyone do last years FreeCycle? I'm thinking about doing it, but I would be interested to hear from anyone who did it last year.

It gets loads of people who don't normally cycle on the roads, with zero sense of their surroundings or any road awareness. So they turn suddenly, brake without reason and go along at a leisurely pace. You won't be able to gain any sort of speed. Lots of young children, babies in trailers/seats/ novice men and women riders

If you saw my Strava, you would realise I'm slower than a very slow thing!! My cunning plan is;- Get up at stupid o'clock (sunrise 5.30ish). Cycle (or drive?) to London and ride around for a couple hours before event starts. By the time the roads get really busy, I will be kn*ckered and grateful for any excuse to go slowwwwly!! Carry on as long as I can, then throw bike in car, or drag myself home!! Hope weather is OK, have booked day off work to do the ride.

For a leisurely ride round London on streets with no traffic its a good day out. I started early with the kids last year and did a couple of laps with a couple of stops at the fun zones and got away about 13.00 before it got too busy. As long as you have the mindset that you aren't going to break any records and stay away from the kerbs where most of the novice riders tend to gather you should have a great time. Enjoy!!

Thanks for the good advice. My records are so low, you never know......... 16 miles to Tower Bridge, pootle about London, 16 miles home. By my standards that could be a "big" day (and no hills!).

Am I wrong when I say it's about an 8 mile loop for this event? Think I red that somewhere or did I get it wrong?

The short loop seemed to be 2 miles. The full loop was 10 miles, and there were a few extra roads closed you could cycle. Roads busy in morning, and seemed to ease off in afternoon. Always seemed to be covering brakes! Lot's of random behaviour, small kids (& a lot older) veering, sudden stops, photography while cycling, etc etc. Would I do the FreeCycle again, YES! Whatever speed you wanted to try and do, there were lots of people going a little faster, which helped carry me along. My standard is VERY low, and I did manage one of my targets! www.strava.com/activities/178050152

Enjoyed the TV coverage and may even be tempted to venture South myself next year. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Sounds like a plan to me. Keeping a group together could be an interesting challenge, but (work permitting) I would like to tag along.......
