I've dodged the question on the Garmin - it's a bit like buying phones, horses for courses, I spent two days watching YouTube reviews whilst working, when deciding on that one last time. Easier to justify the choices on nav' kit than on the power meter really - might have been two separate threads perhaps but I guess putting it together is inevitable - I predict that in 2016 and beyond, both options will be outdated and power meters will be cheaper / perhaps coming as a better vfm bundle with the nav' equipment. At present you can buy a decent carbon bike for the cost of the kit listed and for me that would be the priority - when the current tech' bundle is down below the cost of a T3, then we'll all get one.

I've nothing much to add but I believe folk when they say the power meter is an excellent training tool. I've nothing to train for though so not much use for me. I'm a big fan of durianrider. It's cool that you got to ride with him.

it seems like an impulsive purchase my friend, isn't it? only very high, semi-pro competitive riders need power meter, without high level competitions, without a personal trainer, without a team to compare data with, without a 4h X 5d training week, is quite useless. Probably WATT and VAM calculation on GPS trak is all you need. my suggestion: put that 1000 p. on a beautiful carbon Italian bike

PS - did you have a good time? Yeah, Stages is the one I'm looking at. I had a great time thanks. Β I rode up Doi Suthep 10 times and descended like a rocket.Β I guarantee you will not have descended like me. I don't use my brakes

Couple of questions: 1. Do you think Durianrider is an advanced rider? 2. Relating to expensive or not ... does Durianrider have children? I quite like the guy, he reminds me of me when I was a DINKY .

... and to add some 'meat' to the debate, you don't need a power meter to know that spinning and churning do different things with your body's mechanisms and output, you can 'feel it' (old fashioned idea I know ) . I am amazed that guys who are after a holistic and less 'western' approach to diet / exercise / fitness / life, then opt to choose a 'meter' to judge things that they could do naturally with intuition?

I don't think this is really answering @veganpower 's question.
I watched the video link that was posted and then looked at a video for the Stages one.
I didn't like the way durianrider spoke and wondered whether it was a sponsored message. I then looked at a video for the Stages power meter - It looked cool. But far too much money for me to spend.
I then looked to see if there was another option on how to get the data and checked how Strava calculates power. Seems as if you enter the right details on the site it will work out 'similar' stats for you. These won't be real time, but as a training aid over a period of time they would be good enough for me (I'm just too embarrassed to put my weight onto Strava).
I can't help any further. I have no experience of them, but, from what I've seen, I wouldn't spend more than my bike cost for one.

Perhaps @veganpower should ask for some BROC pals to ride with? Best motivation I've found here is finding some mates to rendezvous with (IMHO) - then you get back on the self discipline stuff in between? Will the Power Meter get you out at 6am or buy you a sarnie when you're tired at the pit stop - then force you over the mountain top?

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more. I'm not vegan because it's more natural than your lifestyle. I'm vegan because I believe it is the best lifestyle for me, my health and the planet. In my opinion a power meter is the same, the best way to my desired results. Oh, and my intuition would be the same as guessing or waiting until after the ride to check strava etc. I suspect we aren't going to agree on this!

1. Yes 2. No Does that detract from the points he made? Yes - because it's biased, as we all are. I don't want to be rude and suggest you are naive but who isn't biased? I don't have children. I've put months of thought into it and I have made it a priority. I would like to be an advanced cyclist one day too. Also, I believe he has a power meter on his bamboo bike as well, so he clearly stands by his opinion that the bike matters to a lesser degree.
