I think that people can have problems with saddlebags, if they are taking the "rules" much too seriously!!! If I had a support car & a supporting team, I would carry a lot less. But as I'm normally unsupported, I will carry on carrying all the things the "rules" frown on!! Yup. My youngest was one of these. He never carried anything, not even in his pockets, other than a mobile phone. I pointed out to him one day that he'd be walking if anything went wrong, as I wasn't going out to him if he couldn't be bothered to carry the right stuff just because it wasn't fashionable.

Perhaps it would look "pro" and therefore in the "rules" to wear one of those bottle carrying vests some domestiques wear? In amongst the bottles, you could have some dummies holding tools, butties etc etc??

During the winter I abolish the saddle bag 'cose esthetically the bike is defenetly better... don't you think so?
so
In summer + two bottles: one salts and one water (the second I use to refresh my head during the ride) + saddle bag for rapair kit, plastic gloves, etc. + pump and autorepair attached to front bottle cage + jersey pokets: money, cell, food, paper, etc.
mmmhhhh I carry to mutch things isn't it?

I use a tool bottle (which holds spare tube, pump, levers, keys & some cash) in combination with a 1 litre drink bottle. Cheshire has plenty of village shops, cafes & pubs, so topping up the drink bottle during the day has never been a problem. Don't have anything in particular against saddle bags; just like the tool bottle. Carry my rain jacket, phone and maps and sometimes some dried dates in my jersey pockets. The village shop in Goostrey carries an extensive selection of flapjacks and coffees, so the dates are for emergencies :-) Sounds like we share a lot of the same tarmac. Although not been getting out much recently at the weekends. Hi goffski, I live in Knutsford & will be easy to spot because I'll doubtless be going slower than you on a T3 with Fulcrum 5 wheels :-)

I'm possibly out that way Saturday morning but not too sure yet. Look out for an all white bike

Neither would get my vote, that's what the middle pocket is for! It's not about rules, as I'm a naturally sweaty person I'll always carry two bottles, even if one is just some water so that rules out the tool bottle. Saddle bags ruin the design aesthetics of a bike imo.
I used to use an old Castelli ziploc bag that originally had some legwarmers in, but for my birthday my missus bought me a leather Rapha essentials case, which fits a multitool, card, cash, innertube, tyre levers and co2 in. I then stash my pump alongside it. I'd never have paid that much for myself, but must admit that, with the leather and satin, it's a lot nicer than what I used before!

I'm probably about the be kicked out of the cycling world as i've just ordered one of these... Noticed a few of them about and thought about one for longer rides (80+). While out with the missus on Sunday i wasn't in lycra so had to take a rucksack to carry a few extra bits so i've pulled the plug on one.

I was looking at one of those the other day, seem expensive for what they are, but I wouldn't mind something similar to stick phone/card/driving license/inhaler/etc in.

I have been using a sandwich bag to hold my items but this pencil case seems ideal to me. It sizes up perfectly for the rear jersey pocket. When using the sandwich bag, the items flop about inside a bit when being handled. There is a packable rucksack in there but I only take it out if I intend buying farm eggs etc on the way back.

That's a pretty similar case to the Castelli one I was using up until recently, I'd definitely recommend something like this and would certainly still be using mine without a grumble if I hadn't have been bought the case!

Yeah, I've been using a sandwich bag as well, but wanted something more substantial. Hadn't thought about a pencil case, I'll have to have a look next time I'm in town thanks for the heads up.
