Just wondering if anyone else is using cycling to achieve a particular goal. For myself I turned 39 this year and decided that I would give myself 12 months to get myself as fit and trim as I could before hitting forty. I had already lost a fair bit of weight by commuting by bike. Is anyone doing something similar? If so what and how? Need some tips and motivation.

Good question, Ade.
Apart from enjoying cycling anyway, my aim was to ensure I didn't carry a lot of excess weight into middle age and to maintain my fitness. I also want to get out in the fresh air and lead a healthy lifestyle.
To achieve this I set myself an annual mileage target and at the start of the year have a good old think of what I want to achieve in the year ahead.
You can set yourself your own personal goals on mycyclinglog.com . I have joined the cyclechat group. On there you can set an annual target and also monthly targets and the software provides you with an array of stats to keep you focused.
Strava is also an excellent motivator with the added bonus of being able to interact with friends and fellow cyclists.

I started cycling to help lose weight. It has worked (though I've still got a way to go.) I didn't think I would enjoy cycling this much. I will certainly continue with it even when I've reached my goal weight.

Thanks for that I will have a look. I have tried Strava out but not really got into it yet. Cycling to work made a massive difference to me fitness and weight wise. This is what gave me the idea to push on with training. I already am slimmer and fitter than when I was 21 but I was a student then living above a kebab shop so that's not really supprising.

Predominently fitness; im due to do my second tough mudder in a month, followed two weeks later by a 10k road race and want to build to a half marathon next year.
Running training is just dull and monotnous, gym cv machines are even worse, so needed a cardio booster that i can actually have fun doing. I also plan to start cycling sportives when i get up to scratch.
Similarly im trying out crossfit this weekend, want to increase functional strength and clisthenics.
....i get bored easy....

I initially started as I got myself into a C2C ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth (2 days) with a group of mates from university. I had no option but to train, it was tough but I got through it. That was a few months back and I'm still going, the main objective now, like most, is to shift some weight and improve my fitness.
When I'm ready, I may try C2C in a single day or just attempt some more challenging rides abroad or wherever. It's quite addictive I must admit!

I started out wanting to be fitter (good job I didn't want to lose weight, I'm basically exactly the same weight [-1kg] but with a totally different distribution) and not able to run any kind of distance due to an old hockey injury.
But I ADORE my bike and riding it, I thought the tour challenge would be a chore, but you know what, 2 weeks in and I still look forward to hitting the roads, I'm getting faster everyday (even when feeling tired) and I curse not being able to do more.

What a story, and great video. I started cycling because I needed something to get me out the house that I enjoy. I'm a freelance graphic designer (cheeky plug) and work from home, I was finding it too easy to not leave the house for 2 or 3 days at a time. Having watched the Tour in 2011 when Cav won green and then Brad in 2012 I remembered how much I used to enjoy riding my MTB as a teenager and began looking into a road bike. Took me a while to get the money together to buy one, and I wussed out in the winter but I'm loving it this year. The benefits to my health have been good as well, both physically and mentally, so I'm constantly encouraging friends to look into cycling.

I mainly started cycling for fitness and weight loss - although now I realise the former is far easier to achieve than the latter (to lose 1 lb of fat, you need to burn something like 3500 Cals!!) Now though, as others have said - I've realised how much fun it is - any chance I get, and I'm out... I'm now mixing it with HIITS (High impact interval training) which I add into my swimming and cycling and the 5:2 diet... I've lost best part of 2 stone since starting it in May - and fitness wise, as I hit 40 (tomorrow) I dont ever recall feeling better - strength, endurance, speed - all feeling great For me, the key to motivation is mixing it up - I cycle, climb, walk loads (cant run, knackered knees) and swim every week...

For me it was a desire to take less tablets for high blood pressure. I was originally prescribed two sorts of meds, one of which is known euphemistically as a 'water tablet', this is doctor speak meaning they make you "p*** over nine hedges" as my old dad used to put it. I got fed up with this, car journeys were a nightmare of forced stops, and so after a about 4 years on them, I one day vowed not to take any more. However, this came with deal that I made with myself (and later with the dr) that I would get a lot fitter than I was to compensate, and so I took up cycling. First it was a spin bike in the yard and later a road bike when I felt I could ride without too much embarrassment. I've got about as fit as I need to, I don't think I'll make much improvement on my speed or endurance without a lot more effort than I've got time to put in.

You and me both! That reaction was almost as good as Chris Hoy's mum in the Velodrome at the London Olympics!!
