Morning all...
I'm in the process of planning my first tonne for later this week, to celebrate my birthday, and more importantly, play with my new toy (which assuming the hints - of which there have been many - are properly received) 0 an Ambit 2 watch...
That said, my furthest distance to date is 80km, and recently, somewhat shorter...
So - top tips for making sure I'm ready for the ride on Friday...?
Obviously, fuelling and hydrating properly on the ride go without saying, as does taking it steady/pacing myself and planning as flat a route as possible... I'm also planning a few days rest from daily swimming after today...
anything else to help?

Must be the week for planning birthday rides as I've one planned for this week. Was thinking about going for a 100 miles but opted for a hilly one instead. I've asked for some new bib shorts from the Mrs but might stick with the worn in Planet X bibs for this ride, don't want to incur any chaffing part way round.

Rest the day before and a good meal the night before, i tend to go for a good portion of pasta. I also try to get an early night and no beer but this never happens, it's usually gone mid night and i've usually had a good few beers whilst it's weekend.
Good padded short, it's gonna be a long time on the saddle, longer rides i always use Udderly Smooth, trust me it helps.
Pace yourself on the ride, basically don't go mad. Ideally stick within a HR Zone, i try to stay between 140 - 145bmp but it does go much higher than this on climbs etc.
Fuel - you'll need plenty of fluid, especially in this warmer weather. In winter i've done 100 miles with two 700ml bottle, summer you're going to need more, just stop off at a shop, buttie van etc to fill up. Food wise try to eat regular, i eat every hour on a ride but i really need to eat more than this, maybe every 30 mins.
Good luck and enjoy.

With the route planning, give yourself a bail out option at a distance just beyond how far you think you can go comfortably. There are few worse feelings than realising you've reach the edge of your range and being miles from home. It can also offer a psychological boost when you ride past your bail out point and you still feel strong.

Would this ton be a proper 100 miles or a pretend 100 as in km ?

Would this ton be a proper 100 miles or a pretend 100 as in km ? the clue is in the spelling to be fair - I've not fully decided.... I think the 100 miler might still be just beyond my grasp, so am really thinking about 100Km - with an option to extend if I'm feeling strong enough on the day...

That's going to be my next aim as well now I think, i was just thinking what my next goal could be to push me up to that 100 mark. Time to get planning some routes. Good luck with the ride. The problem I have had with both the longer rides i have done is that I didn't eat/drink enough. Ended up feeling hungry and out of energy towards the end, but lesson learnt.

Same with me.
I did 150kms in the south downs, not a lot of shops/service stations along the route, so I realised that I was going to be short. First 75 kms one bidon, I was fine at that stage but the damage was already done. Even though I loaded up on drinks/snacks later it was tough going.
Problem for me is I usually cycle at night/evenings, so in the countryside you cant just duck into a shop to buy. And for the south downs route I did, it was one from an Evans sportive so if I had done it with them on the day they would have snacks drinks available, but I was just doing it by myself months later.

Once you've done 1 gran fondo, you realise you can surely do one a month.

wardyuk Drop me a message if you'd like me to shield you from the wind for an hour or so when you do this. You're in my neck of the woods so thought you might appreciate a bit of a pull (especially if you're going for the Gran Fondo!) and maybe even some company to break it up a bit!
