I generally take a very small lock (if I plan to stop) If I had found an affordable, light lock that would go around the work bike racks and maintain the insurance on my bike, I'd have that. They appear to not exist though so I'm stuck with a heavy beast. Or I guess n+1 will become n-1 (the wonders of Reading and London).

Could you leave a heavy duty chain around the work's bike rack?

I often do... then bag just has my lunch in... my ride to work is only 4km (almost all uphill mind) so the bag is no big issue.
But the London trip I wasn't risking losing my pride and joy... plus as I said, I don't have too much trouble with the bag I have.
