Anyone see this excellent 1976 film documentary of that year's Paris-Roubaix last night on BBC4? A very apt title, not just due to the extreme physical and mental demands but, being pre-helmets, very dangerous. Riders lying on the cobbles unconscious, another guy with blood pouring out of a large gash to his forehead down to his skull, just a few of the many injuries. If you haven't seen it before I strongly recommend a visit to BBCi Player.
Also the narrator sounded like a young Phil Liggett but don't let that put you off.

Highly recommended. A beautifully crafted film rather than just the recorded highlights we get these days. And some great names in action.

I watched the first half an hour on iPlayer this morning with my breakfast. Merckx would fit in well around here - constantly fettling!

There have been some good cycling-themed shows all week on BBC4. I've recorded them all but haven't watched them all yet (TDF highlights are taking priority at the moment!)
- a couple of films on Armstongn - a Sunday In Hell
There was also one on last night about a guy building his own dream bike while also covering the development of the bicycle. He visited the various factories where he got the components (Brooks saddle, Campagnolo groupset, some lovely handbuilt wheels, custom frame, Cinelli handlears, Continental tyres....). The guy was clearly a bike nut and got the best components possible but then ruined it with a hideous paint job!!
It was really interesting and he also met up with a couple of the guys who pioneered mountain biking in California in the 70s. Worth watching.

It's called Ride of My Life and makes for very interesting viewing. There's also another documentary called Velorama showing all the B&W footage from the British Film Institute charting the history of the bike in Britain.

Just watched this on my 4-train-change 4 hour journey from Chester to Lincoln. Very good viewing indeed.
