Hey everyone...
I have just been looking at the segments on one of the rides I've done on Strava.
On one segment which is all flat the guy in first position did it averaging over 30mph! Holy cow that's fast.
Anyway I was wondering if he is just a pro biker or is it different gearing or combination of both the things I've just mentioned? Or something else?
Is 30mph something the average Joe part time rider hope to achieve with enough practice?
Many thanks.
The tortoise.

I've touched that on the flat, but there's no way I could hold it for long.
Perhaps your first place rider was drafting?

Drafting and TT bike and it is very very possible. A mate of mine who's no pro did a 21.24 10 mile TT the other week on a near pan flat course, so he was close to 30mph for 10 miles.

Totally doable - I can do over 30mph on flat in a short sprint. In the local TT I did recently the winner averaged over 29mph for 10 miles (in full TT gear).
I've got short local segments on Strava where my average speed is over 30mph

Did the Great Manc Cycle on Sunday, at times i was hitting 30mph on the flat but couldn't keep this up for very long. Got a KOM last year with an average of about 28mph on a 1.3 mile section (it lasted less than 24 hours!).

I think that's the point - Strava makes no allowance for drafting or the fact you could have a monster tail wind behind you on any particular ride. Some of the bunch I go out with can pretty much rewrite the whole leaderboard of a segment with the right conditions. I just watch from way way back It's a personal goal thing and to be honest past the bravado and jesting of it all the best filter I find is 'My Results' - It's a record of where I was and where I am now on the segments I regularly ride.

Also isn't there sometimes some kind of polling on the gps which means the short segments are pointless because they can be in reality +/-3 seconds. Or possible GPS errors. eg www.strava.com/segments/6156056PS.I have the same best time as Dan Lloyd on here.
