apologies if this is posted in the wrong place. Have just been investigating a slight creaking sound around the crank area and having removed the pedal arm on the non ringed side a small plastic type piece fell out that seems to fit around the allen bolts. This piece appeared to have snapped and had a tiny metal pin attached to it. Ive put the pedal arm back on and this piece seems to serve no purpose whatsoever. Any ideas what its for and if its a critical part that im daft enough not to notice. thanks

It does serve a purpose, it stops the crank arm coming off if the bolts should happen to go loose. The tiny metal pin fits into a hole (IIRC or it could be a groove) in the shaft. For the bit to fall out, and then the crank arm, you would have to completely lose a bolt first. BTW, the plastic bit has one hole, and the other 'hole' is a hook. Just wondering if this is what you saw and thought "snapped". Shimano Part Number Y1GE98050.

thats the part yeah, and it had snapped where id forced the crank arm off without realising. How critical is that part as i cant refit it due to 'hole' part snapping. Its obviously not that strong either as i was able to pull the crank arm off without even realising that was supposed to stop it happening lol

How critical? Couldn't say. But I hardly think they'd go to he trouble of making it if they didn't have good reasons or bad experiences.
