Hi all,
Seeing as everyone seems to love Strava, that once my bike is built up, I might like to log my rides too. The only thing is, my Samsung Galaxy S3 likes to spend most of it's time with a flat battery which would only make things worse with the GPS enabled.
So, I got to thinking maybe I could get a bike dynamo and build a little USB charging circuit for it. A quick google search later and apparently they are readily available.
So, who has one and can recommend them?
ta,
Rich

I've been using Strava on a Galaxy S3 for over a year now. From a full charge and in airplane mode with GPS on I still had over 50% battery left after a 7 hour ride so don't bother overthinking it. If your battery is poor then buy a replacement and/or carry a spare.
When you are on the bike you do not want annoying phone calls or messages to distract you. Airplane mode is a must.
If you accepted the 4.3 firmware update then my commiserations.

Buy a fresh battery. I've did 7 hour rides using my Nexus 5 and only used 50% of the battery. There was no need for airplane mode but it will help.

I use a Garmin and don't bother with Strava on phone, but do have phone on sometimes and sometimes receive calls / chat over the headphone mouth piece when rolling along, usually to friends, family and when meeting up with someone etc, usually I'm asked how far from home I am for timing of a meal on return, that's what I call service - horses for courses as ever. I do stick it in Airplane mode as well though sometimes. MY HTC One will do a several hour ride playing music and with the phone function still on, good battery left at the end as well - secret there is to click the screen off and don't light it back up too often (only to change album usually); I also use Battery Doctor to switch off all unnecessary apps. Won't be using a dynamo any time soon, on the trip to France I've got planned I'll turn it off completely if I need to go a couple of days without a charge point.

i have crap old phone. lasts about 4 -5 hours of strava - if i have it in airplane mode and do nothing else. However i usually have phone on coz i get work calls. and i sometime like to take photos - gives me about 3 hours.cant afford a garmin so - 2 options - a battery pack that plugs into your phone - about a tenner. or... i bought a spare battery - 3 quid. longer rides get recorded in 2 bits. dont bother me.

Download an app called 'Battery Doctor' - it's available on IOS and Andriod (probably windows too) and it's totally free.
Absolutely swear by it for prolonging battery life. It's got a couple of inbuilt bits like CPU Booster (shuts off background crap) and Junk file cleaner (deletes temp internet files etc.). But the main thing is that the app does a fancy 'charge cycle' which really boosts battery life.
My old iphone used to be dead by 5pm after taking it off charge in the morning, after getting batter doctor and charging it overnight it lasted to gone 11pm the next night.
Other than that, buy a portable charger like a pebble to keep it going.

Ill have a play will give a test of the next few weeks. =D

I use the one by 'beijing kingsoft' something. Its the first result if you search 'battery doctor' and no 16 on 'top 20 utilities' app list (apple app store)
Dunno about the 'turn processor down' function, mine doesnt have this so might be another app or the android version? Either way, if its turning your phone into a brick its worthless. Just try playing wjth other settings - but mainly run the booster charge (open app and charge phone when it 's below 20%).
Also a note on the 'junk' feature - its designed as a quick cleanup tool, so you have to run it 3-4 times before it gets everything (it'll say 'no jumk files left'). I regularly end up cleaning up 1GB+.

I use a second, smaller phone, that just has MapMyRide running. The other weekend we did a 60 mile ride and the phone decided to jump out of the holder and kill itself. After putting it back together and switching it back on, MayMyRide told me there was already a ride in progress and just carried on. Although the battery was down to 15% with 20 miles to go. I had it with the screen on so i could see what was happening while riding, so had to put it to flight mode and turn the display off - 4% battery remaining when we got back,
Now i've just bought a cheap bike computer so I can see the real time stats and keep the phone running mapmyride on flight mode with the screen off.
