This is the first time in ages, in fact the first time since June 2013 when I was stopped from cycling by appendicitis. Of course I recovered long ago, and cycled lots since but by then the weather went into winter it was back to the car. Today the car is in for its MOT.
Although I have a bike for commuting, it's been standing for ages and is in need of attention, so I took the T3 instead.
How come then, that as I'm on my 'nice bike' only travelling 9 miles, and not going very fast, it felt so tiring?
I couldn't get any speed and it just felt like hard work. The only thing that I can put it down to is having a rucksack on my back, this is too grand a word for it, it's one of those tiny 'day-packs', but it seems to alter the way I sit on the bike.
I think I'll either have to get a larger bag, that fits my back better, or get one of those little carrier things for the back of the other bike.

I find exactly the same. 20-25 mins commute and I'm spent, while I can handle a 2-3 hours of fun at a similar average speed.

Were you wearing your normal kit or work clothes? again more psycological than real

I cycle to work which is only around 5 miles round trip with a 3% climb the majority of the way back and I sometimes feel as knackered from that 5-10 minutes as I did on the sunday social 50 mile club run! It must be psychological, as I only carry a bag one day of the week. I'm not sure why either as the sight of me in lycra walking to my desk from my clothes and then back to the loos doesn't attract the cat calls & wolf whistles from my workmates anymore!

I'm opposite. Always feel great after commute in and love it. Either 8 or 12 miles normally depending on route but often leave early and detour to make it 20-30 on way in.

I am with robertsims on this. I always feel great when the ride is over. That's natural right lol. Been doing 10 miles each way at around 40 mins in the morning and 43 mins in the evening.

Legs were bit achey today so slow pootle in with high cadence of about 110-120 to help flush junk out. Was taking it steady on way home too...then someone overtook me....scr then commenced for next 5 miles. Excellent fun!

When I used to cycle in regularly, I quite enjoyed it too.
I think the reasons i had problems were the bag as I mentioned, and the fact that I tend to take it really easy so that i don't get to work feeling sweated up.
I think it's 'taking it easy' that makes it feel hard work. Because I'm not powering down on the pedals, I don't get the lift that normally takes the weight off the bum. The ride home was totally different (maybe it is psychology), and I arrived home hot and sweaty.
Next time i will take the other bike, this has a much more relaxed position and although not so light, it should be an easier commute. It has platform pedals too, clipped in feat are not good for commuting.
