A very good review of the Triban 500SE can be found on Road.cc which was published yesterday. road.cc/content/review/116333-btwin-triban-500-se-road-bikeOur very early sample had a Prowheel Ounce chainset, but Decathlon have now specced a Shimano Claris unit and the first 1,000 bikes will have a Sora chainset because of delays getting hold of the Claris chainsets.B'Twin bikes seem to be thoughtfully designed, well specced and very easily mistaken for something that should cost an awful lot more money. The 500 SE is certainly the best bike I've ever ridden at anywhere near £380.
In fact I was doing similar average speeds for my regular road loops as on my own road bike, which is theoretically worth about ten times as much.Plenty of specs in there if needed.

I read that yesterday - it bears out my own experiences on flat loops, when my buddy changes from his T3 'trainer/commuter' (the predecessor to this bike) to his Boardman carbon fancy job, the only time you notice any real difference is when he puts on a sudden sprint, he gets the drop a smidgen faster for the split second it first happens, although you can get over this with some big legs and some drafting - he definitely climbs hills faster on his lighter bike though but then he's a skinny waif of a bike rider, the weight difference wouldn't have the same effect on me, as I could still drop a stone or more off the engine weight with a minus spend, rather than etching 1 or 2 kilos off the bike for a few £K. I'm pretty convinced this is the worthy successor to the Red T3's crown and if you can find a few more bucks for the T500 then all the better, although riding the T500SE for a year before changing to a bargain compact groupo deal and a new wheel set would be a smart move as well, or just keeping it as a winter trainer and adding n+1. Whilst I'm happy with the White T3a for my young lad on the whole, the steel forks are robust for long term ownership, keeping it in the family, with a sister who is a bit loopy and thinks nothing of crashing into things to stop, part of me wished I could have sourced one of these last year, ah well, times move on. If you're lucky to get one of the first 1000 with the Sora crank then great, have no experience of the Claris - perhaps someone can comment...

From what I have been told Decathlon have been let down by several suppliers for parts and this has had a big knock on effect with all of the new bikes so they swapped them & have rushed out what they can. Hence the reason they put the Soar crank on the 500se as they will potential already have lost out on a lot of sales from not having the bikes in. The Alur is supposed to be in mid to end of the month so hopefully more sizes of the others will turn up with these for people. &If you have left your details they should phone you when they come in stock.

The 500SE no longer appears on the French website (unless it was only ever an export model?) - hope they haven't pulled it?

I have managed to get a 500 a couple of weeks ago and I believe they are still in short supply... A friend of mine who works in Decathlon mentioned they get numerous phone calls and visits to lakeside Essex asking about availability.... Let me tell you though that the 500 is an absolute steal at 449

Just picked up a 500SE in the Reading, the mechanic there said he hadn't heard they were switching to Claris cranks. He reckoned the 500SE is pointless with Claris and you might as well just buy the 3 in that case. But he seemed to be basing that on the assumption that Claris is square b/b, but I think that is wrong? All Sora for the moment in store though. Spec on my bike 'Double-wall alloy' rims' 622x13c no-name hubs Hutchinson Equinox 700x23c tyres Btwin brakes Microshift triple gear/brake shifters (brakes metal, gears plastic) Microshift front + rear derailleur Btwin carbon blades Shimano Sora 50/39/30 chainset Sunrace 12-25 8-speed cassette The 500 spec: triban3owners.freeforums.net/thread/3639/triban-500-official-decathlon-specSo basically £300 = Triban 3 Triban 500SE +£80 = carbon fork and Shimano Claris chainset future, but Shimano Sora chainset now Triban 500 +£150 (or £70 more) = Shimano Sora chainset, Shimano Sora derailleurs ( ?), Shimano Sora shifters So for now the extra £70/150 buys you the Sora shifters, Sora brakes, and presumably the Sora derailleurs also. Not sure about the cassette.

Makes the T500 look a little more attractive, drops it nearer the T3a - still a good bike, hopefully not going to use a water retaining rust prone BB like the one on T3-red, the Hallowtech hold out better in bad weather than the original BB, other than that, no real biggie, just not quite as sweet. The first 1000 buyers are lucky punters, get one while they're still hot.

I have see the review and as the replacement from my incident seems to be taking Its time to be sorted out. I'm considering getting the se. So I can get back on the road instead of killing my old mountain bike that's all ready well worn from years of commuting. Just need to find one of those beasts.
