A dilemma
Due to ride in London to Brighton in 2 weeks. Haven't ridden for 2 weeks due to sciatic pain. It's a very slow healer. It doesn't hurt much while riding but does after and also doing things like the transition from sitting to standing and vice versa. Fair bit of stabbing pain in my butt and that's not good on a bike seat!
I am getting sponsored as part of a team and don't want to let anyone down. But equally don't want to cause long term damage.
Anyone any experience of this type of injury?
Cheers.

I have mate I had sciatica when I did my back from picking up some socks after using a floatation therapy tank. Think it was where I was so relaxed. My problem was was when putting my foot on the clutch it would flare up and bang ouch. This kept me off work and the bike for about 3 months. Not allowed to drive with sciatica if you ask your dr they will confirm but the worst part is if you do your insurance won't be valid.
Have you been to dr and did they confirm it as sciatica?

Firstly if it's lasted 2 weeks you should see a Dr. I had chronic sciatica some years ago for which ibuprofen was effective. My GP politely described it as a lifestyle problem. Losing 4 stone cured it and my bad knees too. But that was me. The NHS site can he informative. www.nhs.uk/conditions/Sciatica/Pages/Introduction.aspx

I was suffering a couple of weeks back, i went out for a quick lunchtime ride and after i was getting a pain all the way down my right leg. The next day i couldn't walk i was in that much pain. Was taking pain killers for it and by the weekend it had eased of and i managed an 85 mile ride without any pain.
Worth a trip to the Doc's if you've had it for 2 weeks and it's not eased off with pain killers.

I had a pain which felt like sciatica a few years ago. I wasn't cycling then or doing very much of anything bar walking, so I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I found out why/where one day when I got to work and sat at my computer. At the time I was working in a workshop that had no desks, and the PC was on a worktop at which i sat with my knees to one side so that I was twisted at the hip. Now, if anyone had suggested to me that this might not have been the best way to sit, I would have scoffed, because it NEVER felt bad at all while I was there, ever. just that one day when I sat down and turned and then saw stars! I emptied the cupboard below the PC and took the door off, and that gave me a place to put my feet and sit straight, end of problems. Just goes to show how these little things can cause the fault. Spoakes how certain are you that the problem is not your position in the car and the socks episode was what triggered it?

Because I'd not had the problem before that sockgate incident! Friday -Bent to pick up socks an booooooooom took breath away and couldn't move much without pain . Got in car on the Monday after a weekend pottering round the house drove to first site and was in mental pain the whole way got out of car after ten mins and discovered covered in sweat from driving. Now my job involves getting up and down step ladders and lots of stairs and that would not be safe. Ended up seeing te company dr in London and he said yes you have sciatica and should ease off soon as it happened 2 months before they sent me there (went to see my dr on Monday it happened ) kept going back to my Drs asking to go back but wouldn't let me as still in slight pain.
Hope you heal quick (OP).
