Evening all
I am probably getting ahead of myself here but...
When I get my 500SE, how realistic will a 22 mile ride to work be? I would be riding slightly out of rush hour (leaving 9am, coming back 16.00 ish). Is that far? Would I need to spend a lot of time working up to that distance?
And (how long is a piece of string!) how long should I expect it to take? It mainly good roads between Watford and Luton.
Thanks a lot
Nick

The way that I mapped my commute and how long it would take me, was by giving it a try on a non work day. I then factored in 5 mins cool down, 15 mins to get showered and 10 mins contingency (traffic lights etc).
As I have got more used to the commute I have managed to get rid of the cool down and contingency time and now leave later.

22 miles may be a bit of an ask initially Nick. You may need to build up to that sort of distance. Any chance of putting the bike in the back of the car, stopping half way then get on the bike and cycle into work to begin with?

22 miles each way or round trip. If round trip then should be fine. If each way then depends on how fit you are but certainly if did it every day the fatigue will mount up!

Thanks a lot Nick You need to find out how fast you cycle and as the others have said delays like lights ,cool downs AND HILLS. If you use Garmin connect website to plan the route it allows you to put in an average speed and works out how long it should take. Try that?

If I ride in to work, it's just about 10 miles.
I know that's not very far when I'm having a ride out on an evening, but somehow it's not the same when you have to switch into work mode when you arrive. And always on your mind is the journey home; I found myself watching the wind and weather all day.
I'm one of the many who started cycling again (re-cycled?) at a late age, I took it steady and built up the mileage. It sounds daft now that I go out for longer rides but I basically trained up to a point where I felt happy enough to ride in and back again. I wanted to arrive in a condition that wouldn't need a shower, merely a change of clothes.
The first time I tried it was when I had a day off, as I wanted to do it when there was no pressure to get there. I rode in, had a cup of tea with my colleague, and then rode back again. Again, not very far as rides go, but quite a milestone for me.

I'm currently doing an 18 mile each way commute from Kent to Camden on an original red T3, and at the start it took about 1hr 20m moving time, I'm now down to about 1hr 13mins moving, but the *general amount* of time for that distance is about 90mins - when you factor in traffic, lights, stopping etc.
Its weird, one morning, Lewisham roundabout can be bedlam, the next, eerily quiet. The thing that will get you initially will be doing it day after day, the first couple will be touch, but after a couple of week, you'll be able to do 4/5 days a week and laugh in its face. It can be a bit crushing in the rain, but given that if I DON'T cycle, it now costs Β£17 to travel to work, I get motivated by my wallet...!!
Its great fun and just what the T3 (other B'Twins are available...!) is made for...
