So after a particularly wet and muddy ride, and after reading some cleaning tips on the forum, I gave my bike a thorough clean.
As part of this process I did the following:
- Removed the chain, degreased in white spirit, scrubbed. - Removed wheels, cleaned cassette. - Cleaned rear derailleur, jockey wheels etc.
After putting everything back together and applying some dry lube I have noticed that the drive train sounds quite noisy when running through the gears on the maintenance stand. It sounds almost like there could be some friction, and the noise is mainly coming from the rear derailleur. Visually there doesn't appears to be any unusual rubbing on the chain against parts etc. It doesn't help that I don't have a reference 'noise' of how it was before I did the clean, but it doesn't sound smooth as I thought it should after a re-lube.
I am hoping someone might have some ideas as to what might be causing this after cleaning, or whether this is perfectly normal. I appreciate it doesn't help that it's not something that a photograph could show.
It it may be worth mentioning that the rear wheel doesn't appear entirely straight when rotating and there is a slight movement of the rear cassette when this slight warp rotates. This is very minor though.
Only done 150km or so on the bike so far so hopefully something simple.

After cleaning should be nice and quiet, however if you have removed your chain and rubbed lots of parts it could be that some adjustment has moved.
If it's a clicking like it's trying to change gear, then it could just be cable tension, adjust with the barrel adjuster at the back of the RD.
If the noise is more metal scraping then you may have not routed your chain through the RD cage correctly.
See if you can identify where the noise is and post back, am sure 'we' can sort it.

Have you relubricated the chain?

Hi guys - the noise is more of a 'clattering', definitely not scraping. I did relube the chain, but I've applied another layer of dry lube which has actually made a bit of a difference.
Now trying to figure out if the noise is any different to when I bought it. Could be being paranoid?

I had similar last year after a complete clean and dry lube. The jockey wheels in the derailler just seem to run noisily without some proper oil in there, come to that so did the chain.

I had this noise earlier this year after a good clean. I had managed to put the chain back on slightly incorrectly through the jockey wheels on my T5. Felt a little daft.

Chain might not be running on the jockey wheel properly, check it's centered on the wheel. I had a Dawes hybrid that did this all the time, drove me insane.
But you need some proper lube on it after cleaning it so harshly. Not the dry stuff. Probably just noisy from all the friction.

There's a flat metal strip between the two jockey wheels on the RD, if you put the chain on the wrong side of this it will work OK but makes a chattering noise like you mention, and no amount of lube will stop it.
