I looked at the RBS200 in Sports Direct and they may be my choice at the moment, at least to get things started.

I got Keo LOOK pedals and some cheap Muddy Fox shoes from Sports Direct...the Β£18 ones. I've done 1200 miles in them. They do have faults. They are a bit flexible but the worst is the Velcro straps close on the frame side. So they can come undone and rub on the crank. I'm planning to upgrade once they fall apart! Cheers, Muddy Fox's are my choice at the moment.

How are they at keeping your feet dry? Would I need an overshoe? The only reason for asking is due to the fabric area near to the toes.

Mine are still going strong too! In my experience, having been soaked many times, you really need overshoes to keep dry/warm. I keep meaning to get some and only ever remember when it is wet and/or cold.

I use cheap Tenn ones to great effect.

The only reason for asking is due to the fabric area near to the toes. You'll find that with almost all cycling shoes tbh, they're designed for ventilation rather than insulation. Most overshoes are only showerproof as well, especially after some use/washes. I find as with all cycle clothing it's temperature regulation that's most important rather than absolute waterproofing - better to be slightly damp at a comfortable temp than covered in sweat inside a waterproof. Toe covers look a good idea for warmer weather (not tried them yet) www.wiggle.co.uk/craft-winter-toe-cover/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&utm_source=pla&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=uk&kpid=5360435821

Possibly a stupid question but is there any kind of fit more desirable than others with cycling shoes? I remember spiked sprinting shoes needing to be tight... cycling shoes tight or loose or as per trainers?

Does anyone know if Shimano M520 SPD pedals will work with these? www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-rbs200-mens-cycling-shoes-144026I went the M520 SPD route and want to make sure the shoes will fit. The site says SPD-SL & Look compatible so it would assume not, however the shoes themselves have what appear to be SPD fixings on the bottom, in addition to SPD-SL fixings.

The site says SPD-SL & Look compatible so it would assume not, however the shoes themselves have what appear to be SPD fixings on the bottom, in addition to SPD-SL fixings. They will 'work' with those shoes, I would not recommend though, those shoes as I've posted earlier have very soft soles and SDP have a small surface area. I think you will end up with bad foot cramps from the ball of your foot being pressed by the cleat system on the pedal. The 520 pedal is double sided so you can choose to clip or ride on the platform. The road shoes you have linked to have no grips on the bottom, so yuo will have no grips on the platform bit. to the point of which it could be dangerous to use. If you choose sports direct to get shoes from, if budget is major factor then I would recommend a more MTB style with a tread on the bottom with the recessed SPD cleat attachment. They have more material in them, thus they are stiffer and you will have a 'trainer' like grip on the platform part of the pedal. MTB Style Shoe - LinkJust friendly advice, I wouldn't suggest just buying something different if I hadn't experienced it. Hope that helps your decision

I have the mbs100 shoe from sportsdirect (ventura park). I being the mb version they are for spd only. I have been very pleased with them in over a year. I don't go out in the wet though if I can help it.

Thanks again for the advice both @ianmoss and chas, much appreciated. In the end I opted for the MTB MBS100 as suggested by @ianmoss and @windybeard. Budget and the ability to try them on in store were the deciding factors.

FWIW, another vote for these shoes. I'm borrowing a pair from Rad until I get my Specialized Touring shoes for my birthday in a few weeks and even though they're a size too big, it's great to finally have some proper shoes. They make a huge difference
