I've heard there isn't that much difference if you move up or down one groupset as the differences are only small, but jump a couple of groupsets and you'll probably notice a difference.
I've got sora so wouldn't bother upgrading for anything less than 105

When Tiagra was 9 speed and 105 was 10 there was obviously more difference but most things I've read suggested in 2012 Tiagra stepped up to 10 and much closer to 105; 105 is supposed to be a tad lighter and the jury appears to be out on whether it functions any better or not?

105 looks nice. Tiagra is quite uggly imo They had to give people a reason to spend the extra for 105, think I found it

Horses for courses - better keep going and get a Pinarello then ! Although must admit the slab of a big cog could be better, the cranks and other parts are fine; the shifters are nice.

Been out for a ride. The gear changes with this 105 are slightly snappier than Sora. If a bit violent if cadence is not high.
Levers are a lot smoother in operation for sure.
No stupid rattles from the levers.
Really nice range of gears. Like the compact very much.
The reach on the hoods is about half a cm further forward than Sora. I do not like this. Shimano need to look at the design on the tops of the hoods. Seen a Campag setup today that was a lot more ergonomic.

Is it called 105 because it costs £105 more than Tiagra?

Wikipedia says:
Decoy pricing
Method of pricing where the seller offers at least three products, and where two of them have a similar or equal price. The two products with the similar prices should be the most expensive ones, and one of the two should be less attractive than the other. This strategy will make people compare the options with similar prices, and as a result sales of the most attractive choice will increase.

Amazing - fair play - fantastic news. Bear in mind that I've just bought a full groupset (2nd hand shifters and crankset, everything else new) with mix of tiagra and 105 for £190!
Always amazes me what people will pay sometimes on ebay. Anyway great news for you!

Define 'a lot' for us a bit more would you please fella; most analysis I've read says there's little practical difference between 105 and Tiagra, I have ridden 105 older version but not long enough and not back to back so wasn't able to spot any differences as ages apart ... so what have you found? smoother movement of the levers and the mechs. never had sora so wouldn't be able to compare with those.

Not sure about the weight difference, Whitney can't decide on that issue but the 105 differently handle different - better for me. Call it a mind set if you want but I am happy with the purchase.

I will second this but as noted earlier I am moving up from Tigara so can't compare with Sora, so didn't have the noise when changing as noted in this post. I just find changing smoother and I find the that the levers and cranks look a lot sexier.

105 makes sense at 11 speed now they've released it, not so sure when compared back to back with Tiagra when both 10 speed - my levers are smooth and not rattly - placebo me thinks.
