Hi
First post on here and a bit of novice to bike maintenance......
I want to add some new wheels to my bike (sorry - this must be a common thread) I am interested in the Shimano Ultegra 6800 current at Β£225 - Questions
Anyone tried these ?
Do the work with existing group set? (I think that's the right term - The cogs on the back wheel!)
If not, do I need to think again or get some wheels that are?
Thanks

You will need a wheel that is 8 speed compatible, if you are using the equipment that came with your Triban 3.
The 6800 wheels are 9,10 and 11 speed. This means that your cassette (gear cogs) will not fit.
Shimano, Mavic and Fulcrum all have compatible wheels for you, lots here have upgraded, it's very much a budget + personal preference on wheels!
Check out the 'your triban' section. These are usually diary pages by triban owners describing their upgrades.

Isn't 8 speed exactly same as 9 speed though in terms of compatibility (i.e. width of cassette? Thought 8 and 9 speed cassettes were same width in total)?

Probably yes, so a U-turn from me to say that the Ultegra would be good. Worth a check, anybody want to throw me a 9speed cassette width measurement?

I think they will be OK. My son has a Genesis Equilibrium with 9sp Sora. He switched to Ultegra wheels without any problem. They are nice wheels - quality but understated without all the flashy decals.

I'm fairly sure as I said above that 8 speed and 9 speed cassettes are the same width so should fit same wheels. 10 speed is bizarrely NARROWER than 8/9 speed hence will fit but usually needs an extra spacer. 11 speed is wider than 8,9 or 10 so need specific hubs.
Pretty sure that is all correct

9 and 10 speed use the same spacer on an 11 speed hub, at least my 11 speed wheels only came with the 1 spacer.
Pretty sure 8 speed is fine as well, not sure why all the manufacturers seem to have stopped listing their wheels as 8 speed compatible as they used to all be listed as 8/9/10
