Now the Triban3 Red is sold out, is the best (cheapest) alternative the Triban500 SE? I see it has carbon forks. Or would it make sense to get a Triban3 White and replace the steel forks?

At the moment you get a Sora chainset with the 500se as well as the carbon forks so I'd say it was well worth the extra Β£80. There are pitfalls with finding suitable forks cheaply but it can be done if you prefer that route, possibly upgrading the whole groupset in the future.

From what i can see both the 3a (white) and 500SE have a triple front and 8 gear rear, with more or less the same grade components.
So i'd say the only difference of note would be the carbon fork and whether the extra Β£80 is worth it to you.
I've got the 500SE and find the carbon fork very nice, noticeably light and responsive, also less 'buzz' through the handles than the saddle.
Other small considerations; First, 1000 500SE's get the SORA triple crank which is apparently quite a step up from the normal stock (mine's a SORA, but can't vouch the difference first hand). If you can get one with this spec crank it could be worth the extra money. Secondly, Colour Scheme - IMO black looks the tits, white's a little 'meh' and looks dirty quickly (incoming flames!). Third, Can you get a decent/better Carbon fork (+crank) for Β£80 or less elsewhere?

Thanks chas and rossplym. I'm sure it's been said many times, but what a shame they're still not knocking out the Triban3 Red.
