@needles mention of the Dougie Mac Sportive the other day has piqued my interest and I would like to know other members experiences of these events.
I'm sure that some of you have taken part in them.
What was it like? Was it well organised? Did you get looked down upon because you were riding a Triban? etc.

What was it like? Was it well organised? Did you get looked down upon because you were riding a Triban? etc. I did a couple of Sportives at the tail end of last season and have already signed up for 5 this year. They were both great fun - one organised by a cycling club in Perth and the other organised as part of the Tour of Britain 'Grand Departe' weekend, so much more official but both great to be part of. Both events well organised with chip timing, food stops en-route, well sign-posted and 'free' scran at the end. I most certainly didn't get looked down upon for riding a Triban - I did the first one with zoltansocrates and two guys with very smart Β£3K+ bikes took time to stop and chat with us after the event to ask how we'd got on. I did the Tour Ride in a group of 50 other riders and bikes ranged from a Boardman hybrid to an Enigma titanium and a Specialized McLaren Venge. Certainly never witnessed any bike snobbery. Do it - you'll love it and want to do more.

I've done a few and never had any snobbery (can't say I'd care if I did) in fact very favourable comments from a few who had heard about the t3. They vary in price and amount of organisation but generally very good. I like that they give me an excuse to ride 100miles (can't seem to ever justify time to family unless it's a booked event!) and also social aspect of larger groups. like doing 2 or so a year.
Also having one booked up makes me train!!!

I did 3 last year. Level of organisation varied but I enjoyed all of them and hope to do more this year. Already signed up to two.

Hi captslog This will be my first sportive. Must be honest I'm a wee bit nervous as it's on the upper limit of what I've covered in one day so far. I have heard that some people go round on novelty bikes like old Choppers so at least I'll have company at the back of the peloton...lol Needles

I went by car to see the Tour of Britain last year when it had it's start in Stoke. We then traveled towards Nantwich way to see it come through, on the way we went up the hill at Loggerheads.
I remember thinking at the time "bloody hell, I wouldn't like to ride up this!" if you look on the route map you will see it's a around 1.5 miles of ascent. Okay, it's hardly a killer, but if you're mainly on the flat like me (and I like it that way!) it's going to come as a bit of a shock.
I've asked No1 son and he seems interested. look out for a bald bloke on a red T3 having a coronary.
