How strange. My eldest son wrote an application like this as his dissertation when he was at uni a couple of years ago. He made it work well enough to pass degree (more than well enough really, he got a 1st). I just sent him the link, his reply.... "NOOOOOOOOO! Someone has implemented my dissertation. I was never going to have the time or resources to do it to be honest though"

looks like there could be some teething problems...I just plotted a 100mile route from my house and much as I like swimming I don't fancy a 20ish mile swim into the Irish Sea and back.

Unlike the product that actually went to market which is around Β£8000+ to buy, mine could also just be used as a giant touch screen for a computer! Although with the recent touch screen craze of newer PCs, I guess that would be less of an USP now than 2/3 years ago! Funnily enough after a music tech degree I went entirely off music production in general and the touchscreen panel & stand is sitting back at my parents' house gathering dust. I've kept the portable LG HD projector though for film nights!

I see Mapmyrun (assume same for mapmyride) are doing something similar with their 'Route Genius' system. Currently only available for MVP members but using code 'TRYMVP14' gives you a months trial.

bikehike.co.uk is perfect for me. Does routes, climbing, gradients. Shows cycle routes if wanted and can save files to download to garmin

These two are great, ive been struggling with google maps until now. Bike hike seems to be sitting with me better but both are much better than google maps. Thanks
