I have been snacking on the Aldi Flapjack on rides over 25 miles. Now I would like to now is this sufficient? I have been looking around and just appalled at how expensive the so called energy bars are. I know that there are some here that certainly know a thing or two on this topic so I ask, is this enough? Do I have to tank up on the bars Decathlon and Wiggle are knocking out for ridiculous prices? One of my favourite is the fruit version. So, is this truly cyclist's food?

If you can ride as hard as you want without bonking, then you're eating enough. As you get faster/ride further if you start feeling drained on rides or even bonk then up your intake. I just make up my own flapjacks and stop each hour for a piece on longer rides. Nice and cheap

I like the chocolate one, it is a huge chunk of food which keeps you full for a long time, I sometimes grab half of one if I go on a short ride at short notice. I have a couple in the office incase I have to work and miss a meal.

Bananas are great for fuelling and contain important minerals. They have a natural wrapper too.

My faves are home made flapjacks, McVitie's breakfast oat biscuits, bananas in summer, quite partial to a pot of pasta salad and a Lipton's ice-tea from the Co-Op; they do a nice roll at Subway's in Bath, a tuna baguette from Gregg's Chepstow, the scampi and chips at The Boat Inn is nice (on the easy flat bit home after all the harder work) ... oats, bacon butty and coffee at McDonalds for brekie after 45 mins on empty ... I could go on lol ! Mmm ... www.greggs.co.uk/menu/sandwiches/tuna-crunch-baguette/

Short answer from everyone is basically 'no need for expensive stuff' cheap flapjacks or bara are totally fine. A few of us use energy drink as well to get some calories in that way which pick up cheap in holland and Barrett in their 1p sale so end up with 2 big tubs of powder for 8 quid

I make these to take out with me. Only problem I have is stopping the wife eating them all I made a batch of those for me and my eldest daughter as a pre or post swimming/cycling fuel. Tastes very nice but don't try to substitute brown sugar for the soft brown sugar. Normal brown sugar does not dissolve in the oil and I ended up burning the sugar in the oil and inadvertently made a burnt sugary glue that made a right mess of the pan, sink and spoon . Jam butties are a great fuel as well.

Dates are nice on a ride, branded energy bars are not very nice to eat, although trying to chew them and get them down does take your mind off your legs for 5 minutes!!!
