Just browsing for a cheap mountain bike and came across this, good value. PrelovedIt's a shame he didn't think or know to advertise on here. It's odd that the frame is listed as 23" though. I wonder why he didn't just give the size as written on it? 23" comes out as 58.5cm, so i suppose it's a '57'.

He's not even advertised it as btwin. A decathlon triban 3. Looks an absolute bargain though!

Hi,
I'm looking to buy my first road bike and I am really interested in the Triban 3. I was thinking about the white version but the red just seems so much better.
I am tempted to go and have a look at this bike, but I'm pretty clueless about road bikes. Are there any tips you could give me for checking over a second hand bike? Or would I be best buying the Triban 3 white and getting it fitted properly? (or saving for a Triban 5?)
I have been scanning this forum for a few weeks now and it has plenty of great information, so thanks!
Tom

I'd considered it myself as a good supply of spares but I think Mrs Slog wouldn't be too pleased if yet another bike turned up at the house (not all mine by the way, they belong to the sons)

Unless it sells before then, I have organised to meet up and look at this bike on Saturday. Any hints and tips for someone who doesn't really have a clue what they're looking for?
Quite a drive for me so trying to get a grasp of what I'm doing or it will be a wasted journey.

Quite a drive for me so trying to get a grasp of what I'm doing or it will be a wasted journey. A difficult one to answer, which is why I didn't before If it was me, I'd have some idea of what bits are going to cost to replace if they are wrong when you get there. and then... Give the wheels a spin...... Do they run true or do they wobble from side to side hitting the brakes? (loosen the brakes if they are too tight for you to spin the wheel effectively, using the quick release lever) Trail a thumb nail across the moving spokes, they should all sound roughly the same note, if you get any duff notes that's a loose spoke, look at the wheel at that point for a problem. The wheels should turn for ages witha good shove, if they don't it's likely to be a bearing problem* On the back wheel:- the cluster should stay still and not be trying to move the chain too much. It shouldn't wobble from side to side as the wheel moves inside it. this checks the freewheelCheck the gears...... Lift up the back wheel and see if you can get all the gears whilst turning the pedals, bearing in mind cross-chaining. You might have to 'pre-select' and then give the pedals another turn. If you can't get them all, it's not the end of the world because it's down to adjustment. If you have trouble getting any, it might be a fault. Do the pedals move smoothly? Does the chain wheel run true and not look like it's wobbling from side to side? Frame.... NO dents. There is one near the chainwheel to give in clearance from the frame, this is not a dent. Anything else is largely cosmetic, or consumables, brakes tyres etc. and a hell of a lot is down to adjustment. Some bits I have underlined above because I don't know your level of knowledge, look these up. * the wheels are a problem on the T3s, look at the posts on here. Usually they are badly adjusted to start with and not greased enough. If the wheel is ok on the last two points then it's ok. If it was run a lot with those two points, then it might mean trouble later on.

Really want to be a part of the Triban club You're welcome. If there's anything much wrong with it you'll have to ask yourself if it's worth it when another Β£120 will get you a new one and all the guarantee that comes with it.

Quite a drive for me so trying to get a grasp of what I'm doing or it will be a wasted journey. First consideration before you drive over is whether it's the right size for you. Not sure where he's measured 23" but from the picture I'd say it's at least a 60cm and probably a 63cm ie xl. You can adjust the 'bar position with a new stem but I'd suggest unless you're 5'10"+ don't waste your journey. If you're in contact with him ask for the nominal size, this should be on the seriel no sticker under the frame or on the seat tube (57cm,60cm,63cm) you can't measure this. You can then check on the Decathlon size guide if it's suitable for you. PS if there's no seriel number sticker I'd be very suspicious of it's background

Thanks Chas! I'm just over 5'10". I asked him, by 23 inch does he mean a size 57? He replied saying it is 23inch so a size 58. This makes me a bit dubious because even I know a size 58 doesn't exist, I'm a bit wary about the bikes background, or it could be that he bought the bike and was just as unknowledgeable as me.
Thanks for that extra info chas, I will contact him now and ask if he can look at the seriel number to clarify the size.

Thanks for that chas, looks like you might have saved me a pointless drive. He is going to send me over pictures of the serial number but he says it is the largest size they do, which would be way too big for me. Looks like it is back to saving for the Triban5 or 500se.
Or maybe just get impatient and buy the 3a haha.
