I never thought looking for a new bike would be so hard! I'm 2 months into looking and It's driving me mad every time I think right that's the bike for me I see another one. I think because I'm looking around the cycle to work scheme price every manufacture has a model. My budget is around £1300 . I have looked a ribble, Planet X, rose to name a few and I'm just going round in circles. The latest bike I'm looking at is the boardman road pro carbon at halfords the price is top of my budget but if I join the British cycle club I can get a 10% discount (it's £20 to join) so a nice saving and I hope to recoup some of the money spent by selling my 57cm T3 (sorry)
Anyway what's your thoughts on the boardman and if you had £1300 what would you buy and why?
Cheers ACD

Cheers ACD I've been doing the same search... At the moment I'm waiting to find time to go up to Sheffield to have a look at the planet-x RT58 but I'm also waiting for the new mach700. I've not really considered the Boardman, not sure why... another one to add to my list. Have you looked at the MALT-CR?

I think, ultimately, you need to ride a few bikes and decide for yourself, but I agree that its tougher than it seems to spend money! I'm hoping to have a similar(ish) budget to spend soon and I'd like to buy something with as good a frame as I can find. £1300 buys you a lot of 2013 sale bike, for example. Check out Paul's Cycles website - some great deals there - Giant, Cannondale, Cube etc. Personally, I wouldn't buy a Boardman, but that's maybe just me. I'll be interested to hear how your search pans out. Good luck.

I've done the Planet X trip for the rt58 and I left feeling gutted I was sure that was the one, went there with the money in my pocket but it just didn't do it for me. I'll take a look at the malt cr now.

I was looking at Planet X and the likes at offer full carbon and ultegra at this price point but I don't think the frames are that great that's one of the reason I'm now looking at the carbon with 105 at the same price point hoping to find a better frame

That's what has kind of put me off the Planet X. To my mind most of the money in that must be in the groupset and not the frame. For £1300, I wouldn't necessarily just concentrate on carbon. You'll get a lovely alloy frame for that kind of money.

I've limited my search to non ultegra bikes as I agree that at this price point it does seem too great a proportion of the price going on the groupset which doesn't leave a lot for anything else.

I'm not even all that bothered about what wheels are on a new bike. I've already got Mavic Aksiums on my 5a and, whilst not exactly cutting edge, they're an awful lot better than the wheels offered on most new bikes up to and in excess of £1000. My intention is to buy a set of Swiss Side Francs or Gotthards and use them on my new steed.
