It has probably cost me about Β£500ish to get it where it is now but you couldn't buy a similar specced one for the same price. I don't think I'll be changing it any time soon.

I'm not that clued up on bikes but i have the 5a, i imagine the stem setup is the same or extremely similar?

Tempted to give it a try, that's a good tip about not cutting the stem for a few weeks though. Something i would never have thought of.

Yeah if you find it fits the go ahead and do it. The cut doesn't need to be perfect because the edge never comes into contact with anything. Only the stem is bolted to it. You will have to knock the star fangled nut down by the same length you cut the tube (e.g if you cut 30mm off you need to knock the star nut down 30mm). I did this with and old M5 bolt and a hammer, it worked well, that is probably the most nerve-racking part of the process.
