I am really hapy with my new triban 3. However after buying the 63cm triban 3 instead of the triban 5 (not big enough) I have some money left over for possible upgrades. However I know little about road bikes. I'm thinking about upgrading the gearing system bit by bit (I don't havee too much money) could someone help me out? Is it possible to upgrade just the chain set to another tripple, and the front derailier? And do the cassette and rear derailier and possibly shifters another time? If so, could you tell me what would be a viable upgrade option for tripple chainset and derailier for around £100+ish?

Hmm. I thought that may be the case. Do you think a sora complete groupset would be a massive upgrade? As in do you think it would make a massive improvement to the bike?

Biggest improvement you could make for £100 (or ideally a wee bit more) is better wheels.

Thanks. I may do that instead and save for a groupset.

Ps, it's between the sora and tiagra? Any idea if there would be a huge difference between the two?

I have just regreased my hubs and the T5 wheels definitely roll better. It's only a month old.
If I spend £150 on wheels am I going to notice a great difference? Same as a T3 vs T7. Is there £300 worth of difference. It's so hard to say. I justified the T5 as I wanted the carbon fork for the awful road and Sora. But the wheels I can't work out. Perhaps I should trial some.

Wheels will make the biggest noticeable difference. Shimano R501S and RS10s are both under £100. The Sora 3500 group-set is a definite and also noticeable upgrade over stock 2300 but more expensive at about £210+ for the whole grouppo.

The sora groupset is nice and with the shifters now no longer using the thumb shifters and is a nice groupset.
Other than that you probably won't notice a huge difference between groupsets placed next to each other for the ladder. If I were to upgrade from sora it wouldn't be for tiagra, would have to be 105 or above to be worth it - not that I feel any need to upgrade the groupset, quite happy with sora. Only real different with tiagra will be 10 speed.

Ps, it's between the sora and tiagra? Any idea if there would be a huge difference between the two? the main diff i see is that with tiagra you have the ablity to upgrade up the line right the way to dura ace if you ever wanted, you cant with sora, but sora is more day to day which is really what you want, all the super light race stuff is nice to look at and drool over but durability and relatively inexpensive replacement costs are the most realistic option

I've tried both Sora and Tiagra on my T5a and tbh I can't notice a difference in terms of shifting performance. The only differences for me are black vs silver, 9 vs 10 speed and triple vs double. As zoltansocrates says though, 10 speed gives a lot more options for future upgrades if you want whereas Sora is as high as you can go with 9 speed.

Maybe I should just upgrade the wheels, and reconsider the groupset. Especially if you think I'm not going to notice much of a difference. However remember, you've from sora to tiagra. The leap would be greater for me. Especially from 2300 to tiagra?

Best upgrade on a £100 is the wheels and brake pads. Forget everything else until you have about £200.

The leap would be greater for me. Especially from 2300 to tiagra? I would agree with upgrading the wheels first. It may be more noticeable for you making the jump from 2300 but my point was that whether you move to Sora or Tiagra you'll probably see similar levels of improvement either way. I do like having the double crankset on Tiagra but I think Sora may be available in a double version as well so the only noticeable difference is 9 vs 10 speed.

Only real advantage with Sora groupset is you lose the thumb shifters and gain an extra gear. If you only wish to lose the thumbshifters you could buy a pair of the new Claris (8 Speed) ones for around £90 and sell the old 2300s on ebay (maybe get £35-£50 for them)?
