Hi am new to the triban owners club although I have owned my t3 since last September and I love riding it. Spent many a happy hour on the roads and its not been any trouble especially in the Derbyshire hills including HOlme Moss which was a fab Friday afternoon ride. My dilemma now after reading the site is do I start steadily upgrading ( got my eye on the black rs30 and some black shimano 105 brakes) and then start on the gears etc (although I am confused what shimano parts go with which?) or do I simply buy the new Planet X carbon ultegra at 999 ? Welcome.
If it were me, I'd think can I do the carbon bike justice?
Then defining what that is, perhaps riding 30kmh + averages for 50km + rides over mixed terrain on a regular basis would tell you there's benefits to be had from a better bike?
I wonder how much 'better' said carbon bike actually is in reality?
...but it's up to you really.

I agree with Rad. The Planet X looks great, but I still can't get past the fact that race bikes are in reality pretty basic bits of engineering and not that complex. I love Golf (don't shoot me) and the equipment industry is a billion dollar market, month after month the manufacturers come up with jargon for 'game improvement' additions to their ranges. It is interesting, but utter rubbish to be honest. Someone on here summed it up with the fishing equipment shop owner who said the shiny equipment in his shop was not to catch fish, but to catch fishermen!! - sorry to sound so cynical.

That's the big question? Will it make any difference ? Will I notice ? Should I just get the wheels and breaks upgraded. Apart from smoother shifting not sure what else the gears will do for me?

You'll notice.
I recently bought a new frame and forks set and saved 2kgs on bike weight (now 8.5kg) and the bike accelerates faster and climbs easier. But that's not the main thing I notice, the main thing which is instantly noticeable is how much smoother the bike feels, the carbon really does soak up all the road vibrations.
It hasn't suddenly made me faster or upped my average speed, but I ride for enjoyment rather than pushing myself.
I'm not knocking the T3 at all, it's an amazing bike for Β£300. But of course a bike that costs Β£1k and has full ultegra gearing will be a nicer ride.

Upgrading the T3 can get expensive if you don't keep an eye on your spending, which alot of us cyclists have trouble doing anyways.
Both robot and rad make good points. If you are regularly doing 50+ miles an outing then I'd say there is no reason why not to go up to a carbon, especially at the great price for Ultegra. If you are not doing 'serious' mileage, then new wheels maybe enough. You may, like I have, even get away with standard 2300, tuned correctly. Now I am doing more miles, my sights are set on a new bike by next spring.
In addition to the weight saving robot mentions, the stiffness in the frame is something you'll instantly notice. It will mean every pedal stroke counts for that little bit more, especially up those hills. At 1k, you should also be getting a decent BB and cranks therefore stiffer and thus better power transfer.
Of course plenty of other advances on a Planet X bike but you need to justify it to your budget and your usage. A nice road bike not used is a very sad sight indeed.

Thanks for that, I regularly do around 100 miles plus a week. I have loved the last 11 months on the t3 and its a difficult choice.

If I go carbon and ultegra I will still be keeping my t3 so hopefully I will be still welcome You will always be welcome budd' - really, it's a forum for grown ups who like cycling and have a rounded view on life above that premise, that is all ! PS - I have a downhill MTB that cost me a couple of K in my closet, that one was used properly in anger about 3 times, it was used a lot for poncing around Bristol on as well - I rode my hardtail seriously more often but it wasn't such an eye catcher ... that's a story to show that for me, the T3 is the opposite to that youthful turn of the century frivolity and naivety .

If I go carbon and ultegra I will still be keeping my t3 so hopefully I will be still welcome I haven't been kicked out yet. Now all that remains on my bike off the T3 is stem, handlebars, brake calipers, chain & cassette and shifters. I managed to get an offer accepted on some Ultegra triple shifters with carbon levers from the US for cheaper than I could buy tiagra ones so they are winging their way over as we speak (type). Once they arrive I'll get a 10 speed cassette & chain and that should hopefully be the end of my spending for the time being. I'll still wear my TOC jersey with pride if Rad allows it
