Hi all how can I get the 510 to give me directions? I can load a course but what can I do to actually get it to like say show an arrow heading west next 100ft kind of thing?

I was of the impression only the 810 could do that, seems to be indicated that way on the Garmin website.

I've tried the course navigation on mine. It doesn't give you arrows, just tells you what direction to head, i.e. head South-East (there is a North facing arrow displayed on screen at the same time). When you reach a junction or tight bend in the course, that instruction will change to turn left/right.
On mine the course would show on the display whenever there was a change in direction coming up with an audible beep (something that got a bit annoying as it was going off every 30 seconds so I ended up turning the sound off), with the option to tap the screen to return to the previous screen. I'm not sure if you have to set the navigation screen to be active or whether that happens automatically when you load and start a course. Seemed to happen automatically on mine when I started riding.

My memory is not as good as it used to be and don't want to give you the wrong information. Do you use the Garmin Connect app on your iPhone/Android device or just the webpage?

Once you have the 510 powered on and the course loaded, you just select the icon that looks like a file on the bottom left of the screen. From there, you select 'courses' and it'll bring up a list of all the courses you have loaded on the device. On the next screen you can review the details of the course, including a summary of previous time, distance, avg speed, etc; a basic map of the course (just an outline on a blank background), elevation map and settings. In the settings you can edit the name of the course, turn the virtual partner on/off as well as turn the off course warnings on/off. Once you are ready to go, just press 'Ride' and it'll ask if you wish to navigate to the start of the course, which is where you select the tick and it'll bring up the map screen. You can still scroll through the other screens you have set, but when I used it it automatically switches to the navigation screen whenever there is a change in direction coming up. I found this a bit off putting as I quite like to see the stats as I ride and when traveling a winding route, the navigation screen kept popping up advising of a 'change in course in 10 seconds'. This is accompanied by a beep which also became irritating and caused me to turn the tones off. As soon as you reach the start of the course, an on screen warning pops up letting you know you have reached the beginning and the virtual partner will start. If you go off course, a further warning will alert you. Once you complete the course you get a fanfare of beeps (unless you have turned them off which I think tells you if you beat the virtual partner. Apologies if I have missed anything or my descriptions are not 100% accurate, I've only used it once and not been able to get tonight to test it. Hope it makes sense.

My mate has the 500 and i know his shows arrows and tells you how far off the turn is. Not a clue how it works i just remember him saying something about mapping out the route and adding cue points.

I got the 305. I use bikehike to plain and load routes. Once you have planed you route on the right hand side their a add coursepoint click it. Then on you route click were you will say turn right. It opens a pop up and gives you options choose what you want. Once you done what you want click save route. leave it on txc, and give you route a name. The speed is for you virtual partner will do. At the bottom you will see CoursePoint warning distance put in what you want eg: 0.2 mile. Then save on garmin(gps). Then on you Garmin go to training then courses then chose you course. Hope it helps. That how I do mine but mine is a 305

From memory I think it'll just display a message when you approach the start of the course. There may be an on screen prompt asking if you wish to start the course, which you just accept. Sorry, I haven't been able to test it and can't remember for sure.

Drat!!!! Still having issues with the map directions. Ok lets see: set course can see the course map hit the back button hit start button Now I should see directions when riding right? Nope see an arrow on screen. See heading in letters at top of screen It's not even showing me where on the course I am. Am I missing something here?
Hold on a mo. It didn't ask if I wish to navigate this time.

Nope see an arrow on screen. See heading in letters at top of screen It's not even showing me where on the course I am. Am I missing something here? Hold on a mo. It didn't ask if I wish to navigate this time. Right...went out tonight and set a course and took some screen shots as well. Select Course Press 'RIDE' Course Loads and map appears. Start riding...when you reach the start of the course a message appears on screen...Press the TICK Attachment DeletedWhile riding, messages appear with course corrections and distance/time to next change (usually when on a winding road) Attachment DeletedWhen you reach a junction you get a clear direction as shown below (Apologies for the poor pictures!). Note, this does not always display at every junction, I found if turning off a main road you just get the course change as shown in the picture above, whereas if you reach the end of a road, you get the direction shown below (if that makes sense!) Attachment DeletedAs course changes approach, the screen automatically changes to the message screen as shown in the two pictures above (accompanied by by beep). After say 10 seconds, it'll return to the previous screen you were viewing, or you can tap the screen to go back to your previous screen. If you want to see a view of the map, you need to be viewing the 'Course Screen' (not sure if it is active by default, otherwise you need to make sure it is turned on). It just shows a line representing the road and direction arrow so gives you an idea of the route and approaching turns. Hope that is of some use and you can make sense of my explanations!

To my knowledge the course needs a cue sheet to be able to give you directions. I've used courses with these on sportives, but i've never managed to create one using Garmin Connect.
