for drinks all you really need is some cordial, go the full sugar ones for carbs, if you just want electrolytes, the home brand "barrocca" in the supermarkets is as good as any of the expensive tabs on the market, with the addition of vit b.....just beware your wee will look bright yellow

Regarding nutrition, I like to carry a load of jelly babies and some fig rolls on rides over an hour and a half or so. Does anyone have a recommendation for a drink with carbs + electrolyte? For electrolytes I picked up 2 packs of SIS hydro tabs which you add to water on BOGOF in sainsburys last week.

Science In Sport Go Isotonic Energy Gel for endurance and high5 tabs in water bottle for hydration. I still think some actual sustenance is key during longer rides, so fig rolls or my preference, flap jacks are just the thing.

Aren't gels a bit of a rip off though? Seems like an expensive way to get sugar into you.

And a Fruit Shoot bottle should be good for keeping it in your jersey pocket. Gonna give this a go.

Does anyone follow durianrider on youtube? He takes a big bag of raisins and has a handfull every half hour, he eats nothing but fruit but he has a lot of wisdom don't follow him but on tour we very quickly adopted something very similar. Nuts and dried fruit with a drink at the top of every hour unless it was a meal or break time. It allowed us to continue 9am to 5pm (we joked it was our office job) with only short breaks for lunch (30-45 mins) and a coffee break around 2:30-3pm. We didn't worry about if the nuts were roasted/salted or honey'ed etc because cycling all day, you needed the extra salt. It worked exceptionally for maintaining energy levels even with long climbs and heavy loads (4 panniers & rackpack + bar bag on what was meant to have been an extended world tour).
